This doctoral thesis provides an analytical-biographical study of Sir Daryl Lindsay, Director of the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) 1942-1955. It covers the period from his birth in 1889 until his retirement as director of the NGV. A final chapter offers an overview of the following twenty years until his death in 1976.
Sir Daryl is credited with implementing many significant and major redevelopments in the way the NGV approached its exhibitions and collections, as well as acquiring works of international importance. He has equally been criticized for a certain level of conservatism in his purchases, and several acts of deaccessioning; aspects which are discussed in the thesis.
In the absence of any prior biographical study of Sir Daryl's life, this thesis devotes several chapters of Sir Daryl's life prior to his appointment as director. It will suggest that the experiences he gained in a variety of positions before commencing at the NGV in 1942 were fundamental in shaping his approach to gallery administration and collecting practices.
